Jarena Lee
Biography
Jarena Lee was an African American preacher and evangelist born on February 11, 1783, in Cape May, New Jersey. She is widely recognized as the first female preacher in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, a groundbreaking role during a time when both racial and gender discrimination were deeply entrenched in American society. Raised in a devout Christian household, Lee felt a strong religious calling from a young age but initially struggled to find acceptance as a woman preacher within the male-dominated church hierarchy. Despite initial resistance, Jarena Lee was eventually authorized by the AME Church's founder, Richard Allen, to preach. Her sermons were characterized by passionate oratory and a focus on spiritual empowerment, particularly for African Americans and women. She traveled extensively, preaching in various states and gathering followers. Lee's ministry contributed to expanding roles for women in religious leadership within African American communities and helped lay the groundwork for future female religious leaders. In 1836, she published her autobiography, "The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee," one of the earliest autobiographies by an African American woman. The work details her religious experiences, struggles against gender barriers, and dedication to her faith. Lee's legacy endures as a pioneer who challenged societal norms and inspired generations of Black women in ministry and activism. She passed away on June 10, 1864, leaving behind a profound impact on the AME Church and African American religious history.
